The identity of Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Kathīr b. Yasār is unknown and he is only listed in conjunction with this passage in the pre-modern corpus. TDSHV69P189B (Ibn ʿAsākir, Taʾrīkh madīnat Dimashq, vol. 69 p. 189) lists a Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Kathīr al-Ṣawrī, who apparently gave dictation to Abū al-Ḥasan Khaythumah b. Sulaymān and heard from Mūʾmmal b. Ismāʿīl. The editor of the text states that his name may have been Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr. BNTHV09P144F (Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Thiqāt, vol. 9 p. 144) gives this name but does not list a date of death. TDSHV46P301B (Ibn ʿAsākir, Taʾrīkh madīnat Dimashq, vol. 46 p. 301), however, gives his name as Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr b. Wafdān al-Ṣawrī, which would seem to eliminate him as the possible source. Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī gives two variations of the name: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṣayfūrī who lived at the Syria Gate in Baghdād around 273/886 (see KHTGV02P283A (al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, vol. 2 p. 283)) and a Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr al-Ṣawrī but gives not biographical details (see KHTGV08P665A (al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, vol. 8 p. 665)). According to KHTGV07P623A (al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, vol. 7 p. 623), Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid’s kunyā was al-Hāshimī and Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān is listed as al-Bāghandī. JJKXV02P396D (al-Jurjānī, al-Kāmil fī ḍuʿafāʾ al-rijāl, vol. 2 p. 396) states that Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid related from Wahb b. Jarīr, the son of the witness Jarīr b. Ḥāzim. He was also appointed Qāḍī of al-Baṣrah (KHRXV01P328B (al-Khalīlī, al-Irshād fī maʿrifah ʿulamāʾ al-ḥadīth, vol. 1 p. 328)). He was also appointed chief judge of Rāʾy in 240/854 and died in 258/871 (KHTGV08P55A (al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī, Taʾrīkh Baghdād, vol. 8 p. 55)).
