Hammām al-Ḥumayrī, al-Muṣannaf, vol. 7 p. 379) places this in the context of Ibn al-Nuʿmān and TKXXV03P375A (Ibn Saʿd, Ṭabaqāt al-kubrā, vol. 3 p. 375) quotes a portion of the passage in the biography of al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr (although he appears to suggest that Ibn Isḥāq names him as al-Nuʿaymān). TKXXV03P375A (Ibn Saʿd, Ṭabaqāt al-kubrā, vol. 3 p. 375) states that Nuʿaymān b. ʿAmr was the younger brother of Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr. Ibn al-Nuʿaymān or al-Nuʿaymān is not mentioned in the redaction of Ibn Hishām. He is sometimes identified as al-Nuʿaymān b. ʿAmr b. Rifāʿah b. al-Ḥārith. According to JWZXV05P277A (Ibn al-Jawzī, al-Muntaẓam fī Tārīkh al-mulūk waʾl-umam, vol. 5 p. 277), al-Nuʿaymān participated in Badr, and all of the famous battles in which Muḥammad fought. He was known to have repeatedly been punished for drinking nabīdh. BKHBV06P431A (Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm al-Bukhārī, Taʾrīkh al-kabīr, vol. 6 p. 431) and TBRCV11P554A (al-Ṭabarī, Taʾrīkh al-rusul waʾl-mulūk, vol. 11 p. 554) mention the account of ʿUqbah b. al-Ḥārith where he describes being ordered by Muḥammad to beat Ibn Nuʿaymān or al-Nuʿaymān with shoes and palm branches for drinking. TKXXV03P375A (Ibn Saʿd, Ṭabaqāt al-kubrā, vol. 3 p. 375) states he died in during the caliphate of Muʿawīyah but KTHBV08P070A (Ibn Kathīr, al-Bidāyat waʾl-nihāyah, vol. 8 p. 70) places his death in the year 54. HJRSV06P353A (Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī, al-Iṣābah fī tamyīz al-ṣaḥābah, vol. 6 p. 353) states that Ibn Isḥāq identifies him as al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr and not as al-Nuʿaymān, this follows the comment of Ibn Hishām in vol. 1, 703A. A person identified as al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr is mention twice in the redaction of Ibn Hishām: on vol. 1, 552A he is identified as a Jew who was one of two Rabbis who questioned Muḥammad and then rejected him. On vol. 1, 703A he is identified as al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr b. Rifāʿah b. Sawād, a member of the Sawād b. Mālik b. Ghamm clan, among the Anṣ ār, who participated at Badr. Ibn Hishām, in his commentary, states his name was Nuʿaymān. It is not clear if Ibn Isḥāq understood al-Nuʿmān b. ʿAmr to be the individual who is commonly referred to as being punished for drinking.
